Written from a shepherd's point of view, David concluded that no matter what he needed, God provided. He directed David's soul to righteousness. He comforts him (and us) when he walked through the shadow of death. Knowing all this about his Savior, David realized His Goodness and Mercy (lovingkindness in some transliterations) will never leave him as long as he dwelt on earth and he took comfort knowing he would dwell with Him for eternity. 

Precious friend, we serve that same God. The God who remains the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is our Good Shepherd. Let His Goodness and Mercy wash over you. 

Deuteronomy 7:9 - Know therefore that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His lovingkindness [mercy] to a thousandth generation with those who love Him and keep His commandments;

 Numbers 14:18 - The LORD is slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generations.

1 Chronicles 16:34 - O give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; For His lovingkindness [mercy] is everlasting.
